Who else have Vietnamese parents who support Trump?

I don't get why that's the case. I argue with my parents about it because they are like hardcore Trump fans but can't tell me why. They talk about him like he's some god and it's sad knowing how brainwashed they are.

I also asked all my Vietnamese friends if their parents are pro Trump and most of them said yes and they were also not sure why. But my friends who are in their 20s-30s are like 70% for Biden, 30% for Trump.

It looks like older generations really like Trump while the younger think he's an idiot.

My parents don't even care about politics so much these days. They voted for Hillary last election, but don't like either candidate this time around and have decided their vote won't matter.

I think it's a mix of young and old. A lot of my friends here in the US are for Trump, while few of them are for Biden. I'm uncertain who I would even vote for at this point, but I am leaning towards Biden.

I also think some Vietnamese parents' obsession with Trump a bit odd. My mom supports Trump but my dad does not. I think we should try to look at different perspectives and in the eyes of another person rather than dismiss them though. People always have a reason for supporting who they support.

From my understanding, these are some of the reasons why they might support him/republicans:

1. He is a businessman. I'm sure you know that many of our parents own businesses (nail salons, restaurants, stores, and such). They probably think he is a president that is good for businesses since he is a businessman. Of course, we know that just because you're a "good" businessman, doesn't mean you can run a country well.

2. They believe he is tough on China. He initiated a trade war with China over unfair trade policies. This is something that both democrats and republicans agree on but no one has acted on it before Trump. Another thing, China has been having land disputes with multiple countries in Asia, one including Vietnam. China and Vietnam have been having a dispute over the Paracel Islands and the general area of the South China Sea. Some Vietnamese fishermen boats have attacked and fishermen assaulted at sea by the Chinese military. The younger generation (especially the overseas younger gen) doesn't pay attention much to this issue but the older generation does. They believe that Trump is helping keep Vietnam's and other countries' sovereignty by having patrols in the South China Sea. The one thing is though, the patrols did not start under Trump. The USA has been having patrols in that area since 2015 under Obama. Trump did increase the frequency at which it happens though.

3. Patriotism. I am no patriot, but even I can see that the Trump supporters are significantly more patriotic than Democrats. One of Trump's campaign slogans was "America First". While some Democrats have burned American flags, Trump supporters are flying them all over the place. Now, see this from the perspective of the older Vietnamese immigrant generation. Many of them are patriotic and love the USA. The USA is the country where they escaped from communism. It is the country that allowed them to rebuild their lives and experience freedom. Many of them are thankful to the USA. When they see democrats burning American flags and "destroying the country", they obviously get a very bad impression of the democratic party. This isn't a thing special to Vietnamese American immigrants either. Patriotism as a reason for republican and or Trump support is also seen in other immigrant populations who come specifically from communist or post-communist countries such as Cuba, Eastern European countries, and Russia.

4. Religion. A lot of Vietnamese immigrants who came to the USA because of the war were Catholic. Minus my family and extended family, many of the Vietnamese families I know in the USA are Catholic. Many Catholics are adamantly against abortion. Buddhists are also against abortion, though not as extreme as Catholics. That could be a reason enough to never vote for the democratic party. I have heard someone say that they don't even like Trump but they will vote for him solely because of the abortion issue.

I hope this gave you some perspective as to why some older generation Vietnamese may support Trump and the republican party. If your friends are genuinely curious, you could give them these reasons also. I used to think anyone who supported Trump was "lost" and couldn't possibly understand why they would support him. Now, I always try to understand other people's perspectives rather than dismiss them. I don't want to tell you how to deal with your parents but I think you should just live and let live. Life is too short to fight with your parents over politics.

Trump's strong position on China is why my parents voted for him. But I think Biden will also be strong on China. My parents only look at the surface tbh. But still, Trump on the surface should also ring alarm bells. I try to explain how he thought Lysol could cure coronavirus, how he thinks wearing a mask is stupid, how he paid more taxes to China than the US and how mail-in voting is a fraud.

When my parents agreed with Trump that mail-in ballots are fraudulent I said I'll go vote in person and come home then. I won that argument instantly  Laugh

Most of the Viet Kieu Trump supporters are in OC. I have a love hate relationship with OC as I lived there for over 15 years before moving out. I love the food and culture but too many people haven't moved on from the war. Gotta respect their passion for Trump though. Wished the other side organized something like this.

@jerry this is a much better debate than the first one. No interruptions.

I tuned into last nights debate and I must agree with pewdee. It wasn't as messy as the first debate was. There was some interruptions, but it kind of slowed down after a bit.

As for my family voting for trump, most of them aren't. But a few of them are, which is to be expected. We try not to argue about politics in our family, we respectfully decline the discussion if we're having a meal together or spending time together.

But yeah, I don't know how people go for Trump. I'll admit, he held his own a lot better this debate than I thought he was going to.

The debate was good, but Trump just kept attacking Biden's family and not really talking about fixing the country.

This is too cringe and cult-like. I don’t support them making Viet Americans look uneducated. im glad the daughter was able to convince her dad to vote for Biden. I wish I could do the same with my Viet parents but Im too lazy to make a 20 page powerpoint slide for my way too stubborn parents. It’s up to the younger generation to vote, convince their parents and make a change. Don’t fall for this anti-communist trap.

This is another good read about what’s happening in the Vietnamese American community. I suggest you read it if you can relate to having parents that are pro Trump.

Vietnamese people are not " naive", or brainwashed". Some like Trump, others dislike him, or even don"t Care. However, after he became the US President, they feel more respected than before. "Past is the past" is true in Vietnam. people in the world maybe know nothing about Vietnam for a long long time. Most Vietnamese like Americans more than Chinese. That is true. Vietnamese just hated Us, soldiers, in the past, they never hate the American people in general. Vietnamese also love American culture.
