What is Pavement Design?
Pavement design is simply the process of planning, designing, and constructing pavements for road crossings, parking lots, playgrounds, footpaths, and many other applications.
Flexible and Rigid Pavements
The two different types of pavement are – Flexible and Rigid.
Flexible pavements — Flexible pavements are used mainly in parking lots and driveways. This type is not as expensive to install but is not as durable or long-lasting as rigid pavement. It does create a softer surface that offers a smoother ride for vehicles. Flexible pavement is made of layers of asphalt, cement, and aggregate.
Rigid pavements — rigid pavements are the ones you generally see on highways and streets. These can offer a smoother ride but they are more expensive to install. They also crack more often due to the stress put on them by vehicles driving over them.
A rigid pavement, typically made of asphalt or concrete, is the most common. It is designed to be a solid and stable surface that can withstand heavy traffic and will not crack easily.
