Why are CPU prices still so expensive?

Has anyone else noticed this? I would imagine you would have to be interested in PC building to know but many of them are selling for much over their actual value. Mine, which I paid $170 for a few years ago is selling for $600 right now. It is almost 6 years old at this point!  Why are they so expensive?

Covid and the fact that a lot of factories had to close up due to it. That's why you're seeing a big shortage of CPUs and other PC parts.

There was a chip shortage that started prior to COVID and when that sets in, it made things worse. There were delays in shipping, labor shortages, and resource shortages.

I completely forgot about the chip shortage! I remember that being an issue mid to late 2019. No wonder things are so much worse now. Other computer parts have gone up in price as well. I do not plan on upgrading mine anytime soon.

I read that the prices will be coming back down in 2022 so fingers are crossed. I have been waiting to do an upgrade with my PC because of the prices being too expensive.
