Do you think sitting too much is causing a lot of modern health problems?

I have a friend that does IT work. He sits for most of his day and then sits more when he gets home. He is only 30 and is already complaining about back pain, knee trouble, sleeping problems... Things you would expect a 50 year old to complain about. Do you think sitting too much is leading to all of these health issues in younger adults today?

I certainly don't think it helps. Between the diet, lack of exercise, and many modern medicines it seems people may be living longer but they are not healthier. If anything, people are more unhealthy now than just 100 years ago.

I know sitting or standing for extended hours if you have bad posture will cause problems. Most people seem to have some level of bad posture as well. So I am sure it does play some sort of role.

I am sure a lot of modern things are adding up to cause issues. Humans in general are not as active yet eat a diet that is mainly designed for highly active people.

Sitting too much, eating too much, not breathing enough, not drinking enough water... It all factors in. I think if sitting too much was your only "bad" habit, you would still be in better shape than people who are active and eat nothing but junk and drink alcohol.

@kikobeep I was going to say the same thing. A lot of people aren't unhealthy for one reason but multiple reasons. I have known people who are very healthy and sit most of their day. They are not very active but they are also not overweight and eat healthy.

I think the human body is designed to move and when you don't move it enough, you inhibit its ability to repair itself. There are studies that show this. Movement can be more healing than medicine or food!

I can tell you the more I sit, the worse my pain is. I am more active in the summer and as a result I feel less pain and I sleep better.
