Egg prices don't seem to be coming down anytime soon and I am eating them more often now as a more healthy protein alternative that is mean to be cheaper than meat. Not so much these days. I am considering getting a few chickens. I just don't know how hard they are to care for. They sell them nearby for $20 a piece.

Heck no, they are too stinky! I have an uncle that has 9 hens and a rooster thought. That is where I get my eggs from. I think the care is easy but very repetitive and you have to make sure they are not sitting in their filth too long or they get sick and can spread illness to you.

@douknowhat I mean, they only stink if you don't clean up after them. They poo 24/7 which requires a lot of cleaning.

My family had them when I was growing up. It is not hard work but it is a lot of work. It is mostly needing to keep their area clean. They are birds and birds poop... A LOT.

The person I used to live next door to when I was renting a house had some. The roosters are VERY noisy and she had to deal with complaints all the time so I would avoid getting one of those unless you live somewhere that has housing spaced out enough for it. They are noisy all day, not just in the morning.

I had a few when I loved with a friend. We decided to take in 3 hens when the neighbor was moving and said we could have them. We got about a year and a half worth of eggs. They stopped laying since then. The friend I lived with at the time still has 2 of the 3. I guess most hens only lay eggs about 2 to 3 years and then live another 2 to 5 without laying anything.

Many people have chickens here. Eggs and chicken meat are widely used in dishes. The funny thing is that even people living in a big city like Hanoi have some (2 or 3 + rooster). I always find it funny to see them picking in the gutter and then going back "home".

My family had some growing up. As long as they are well cared for, they hardly smell. You just have to keep their home clean and make sure they can free roam enough.
