Would you let your child have a smart phone?

A friend of mine got her 9 year old daughter a smart phone for Christmas. I think it is too young to have a smart phone. I would say that 14 to 16 is okay, depending on maturity. There are too many adults online looking to prey on young children and most don't know any better. Would you let your child have a smart phone?

I think a flip phone or any non-smart phone is fine for younger kids. It is about safety more than anything but I would never buy my child a smart phone. They would have to wait until their are old enough to work and pay for it themselves.

I was not allowed to have a phone until I was 14 years old. I think that is a good age for but I am not sure if I would trust a 14 year old with a smart phone. Not that I would have issues trusting my own child but I feel like there are a lot of evil people out there looking to prey on children and it freaks me out.

I wouldn't let my child have a computer that young so I sure as heck wouldn't allow a phone. I think parents who allow this don't even consider the dangers online from pedophiles to grooming of all kinds. Kids can get messed up through the internet.

I think it depends. I am not sure how I would feel about it right now. I think 9 years old is too young though. Phones these days are tiny computers essentially.

I would but not until they were old enough and responsible enough to have one. I have met 12 year olds that are more mature and aware of internet dangers than the average 40 something year old parent.

I was not allowed to have a phone until I was 18 and able to apply for one myself. These days, you don't need a credit line or any proof, or contract. You can easily get a pay-as-you-go plan. I think I would allow it only if my child could afford it which means they will not have one until at least 16 years old.

Uhh, no. I don't think I would. Knowing how messed up social media is making kids, I would be paranoid my children would end up on those platforms.

That is way too young! Even for a standard phone. Maybe I am oldschool but I don't think anyone under the age of 15 should have one. Not unless they were mature enough to handle one. They say most 18 year olds are like 12 year olds these days from a decade ago. So maybe 15 is even still too young. I don't have kids yet though.
