I think people opt for hotels because they are easier and overlook room shares and smaller accommodations because they don't know what they are getting. If you actually look online, most places these days have reviews and pictures. 

Travel seems to be the most overlooked thing. A lot of people just assume all travel is cheaper there and while this is true, you can save a lot when you know where to go and how to travel throughout the cities.
