Late answer, so, it is for new readers. Vietnamese drink tea constantly. Traditionally, in street restaurants, they bring you some for free + there is a separate table at the entrance where people drink some after the meal. It's all free. They drink more and more coffee, one of the best in the world. Vietnam is the 2nd producer and exporter of coffee in the world after Brazil ; it is grown in small individual plantations in the region of Dalat. Trung Nguyen is the best brand. Much more expensive then tea It it is generally served in big glasses with ice : ca phê den da - pronounce the "n" of "den"i, meaning ice black coffee - "ca phê" pronounced "café" like in French). If you want black coffeewith no ice, you ask for ca phê den khong da ("Black coffee no ice" ); that one is served in small cups and is very very strong (called espresso in fancy places).
BIG rice alcohol drinkers during and/or after meals, or between...and it goes 30-50° ; drunk in one gulp in very small glasses, often half--liter per person. The problem is that, if you are with let's say 5 Viet, you have to drink 5 glasses, which, out of politeness, are refilled right away unless you indicate "No, thank you". The traditions want that, after each glass, everybody shakes hand with everybody else;
Few Locals drink wine, though some excellent ones are produced in the region of Dalat (Vang Dalat), from vineyards planted by the French during the colony. Quite good ; the best are Export and Château
